Checklist — daily check

Daily check — checklist

For use before the first lift. This is a memory aid, not a substitute for the manual for your crane. Findings are reported and written down the same day.

At ground level

Support: foundation, ballast, rails or outriggers — no settlement or movement
No excavation, filling or storage against the foundation since last time
Area beneath the crane clear, nobody where loads will travel
New obstructions in the working area — scaffolding, masts, other cranes
Visible damage to tower, jib and counterweight
No new leaks under machinery

Access

Ladder, rungs and rest platforms free of ice, snow, grease and loose objects
Fall protection system in place and undamaged
Guardrails and hatches sound and closed after passing

Cab

Glass clean, wiper working
Emergency stop works
Fire extinguisher present and within inspection date
Radio works, channel agreed
Anemometer reading
Controls marked and undamaged
Manual and load chart available in the cab

Function test without load

All motions run smoothly, without unusual noise or snatching
Brakes hold on all motions
Limit switches respond
Overload device responds when tested — never overridden
Warning lights and audible signal work
Anti-collision system active where fitted

Hook, rope and gear

Hook: safety catch springs back and closes fully
Hook free of visible cracks, gouges or twist
Hook rotates freely where it should
Wire rope over visible length free of broken wires, kinks or birdcaging
Rope seated correctly in sheaves and on the drum
Gear to be used today: marked, undamaged and within inspection date

Weather and conditions

Wind assessed against the limits in the manual for this crane
Ice or snow on structure or load assessed
Visibility adequate for the lifts planned
