A complete chain sling assembly consists of more than just the chain itself: a master link (or master link assembly) at the crane hook end, intermediate connecting links, one or more legs of chain, and end fittings such as hooks, rings or clevis attachments. Multi-leg slings (2-leg, 3-leg, 4-leg) also include a master link sized to take all legs together without overcrowding, since crowding at the master link changes the load angle on each leg.
Where a sling needs to be used shorter than its full length, it must be shortened only with a purpose-built device: a clutch, grab hook, or shortening hook designed and rated for that chain grade and size. These devices grip a single link securely and are stamped with their own WLL. Improvised shortening — looping the chain back on itself, tying a knot in it, bolting or wiring links together, or twisting a link sideways over a hook — introduces sharp bend radii and point loading the chain was never designed for, and has caused documented failures. This must never be done, regardless of how the load looks on the day.
Every component in the assembly — master link, coupling link, clutch, hook — must be matched to the same grade as the chain. Mixing a Grade 100 chain with a Grade 80 master link, for instance, downgrades the whole assembly to the weaker component’s rating, and the tag will no longer correctly describe the sling’s real capacity.
Before use, check that all components carry legible markings, that hooks have functioning safety latches, that clutches and grab hooks are not deformed, cracked or worn at the bearing point, and that master links show no elongation, gouging or twist. Any assembly with a mismatched, missing, or altered component should be withdrawn and referred to a competent person rather than repaired informally in the field.
- Never combine components from different manufacturers or grades without documented compatibility.
- A shortening clutch loaded off-axis loses much of its rated capacity — keep the pull in line with the clutch body.
