A chain sling is an assembly of short-link chain fitted with master links, connecting components and hooks or other end fittings, used to attach a load to a crane hook. Chain is favoured over wire rope or webbing where the load has sharp edges, high temperatures, or abrasive surfaces that would cut or melt other sling types.
Chain used for lifting is manufactured to a defined tolerance class and grade — commonly seen markings are Grade 8 (80), Grade 10 (100) and Grade 12 (120). The grade is stamped or embossed directly on the chain links at intervals, and again on the identification tag attached to the sling. Higher grade numbers indicate higher-strength steel for a given diameter, which is why grade, diameter and number of legs together — not grade alone — set the working load limit (WLL). The WLL and the grade must always be read from the tag; never infer it from the chain’s appearance or diameter alone.
Before use, check that the tag is present, legible, and matches the sling actually in hand — mismatched tags happen when slings are repaired or reassembled informally. Look along every link for wear at the bearing points, gouges, nicks, corrosion pitting, splayed or bent links, and any sign of heat damage (discolouration, weld spatter). Check that the chain runs freely through master links and end fittings without kinks or twists, and that hooks are not bent open, cracked, or missing their safety latch.
A chain sling found with any of the above defects, or without a legible identification tag, should be withdrawn from service and tagged out of use, then referred to a competent person for inspection and repair or scrapping. Chain slings must be re-certified periodically by a competent inspection body, in line with Arbeidstilsynet’s requirements for lifting equipment.
- Never shorten a chain sling by knotting, twisting, or clamping it back on itself — use a purpose-made shortening clutch or grab hook.
- Never exceed the WLL for the actual sling angle in use — angle multiplies effective load on each leg.
