Polyester fibre rope

Polyester rope is one of the most common synthetic fibre ropes on a work site: it holds up well outdoors, resists rot and most chemicals, has moderate stretch (less than nylon, more than HMPE), and retains a reasonable amount of strength when wet. It is used for tag lines, hand lines, mooring, general rigging, and — when purpose-manufactured, tested, and tagged as such — lifting slings. A length of general-purpose polyester rope bought off a reel is not automatically a rated lifting accessory; only rope that has been manufactured and certified to the relevant sling requirements, with a proper WLL tag, should be used to lift a load.

Construction varies: three-strand (twisted) rope is cheap and easy to splice but has more stretch and rotates under load; double-braid or plaited constructions are more common for lifting and rigging use because they don’t impart rotation to a suspended load and distribute load more evenly across the fibres.

What to check before use:

  • External wear, fuzzing, or cut fibres — polyester is reasonably abrasion-resistant but sharp edges and repeated friction (e.g. running over a rough sheave) will cut it
  • Glazing or a shiny, melted appearance from friction heat, which weakens the rope locally without visible fraying
  • Stiffness, brittleness, or fibre powder shaken from the rope — signs of chemical attack (some acids and alkalis degrade polyester) or advanced age/UV exposure
  • Localized diameter change indicating internal damage even where the surface looks intact
  • For any rope used in a load-bearing role, a legible tag showing WLL and that it is rated for lifting, not just general-purpose cordage

Where polyester rope is used for anything load-bearing, it should be inspected periodically by a competent person, and retired on any of the damage signs above rather than being left in use as long as it still holds.
